The Met in Bury is one of the country's busiest arts centres with a range of events from theatre to rock gigs and family shows to acoustic concerts. If you have a passion for live entertainment and would like to learn more and add to some basic skills and experience as a technician, our new part time technical assistant post (mainly Saturdays setting up for events) might be for you.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANT – The Met, Bury

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job title:                             TECHNICAL ASSISTANT

Salary:                               £7 per hour/

Contract:                            Permanent, part-time

Accountable to:                  Director

Immediate Supervisor:         Technical Manager

Immediate Subordinates:     Volunteers, trainee staff

Hours of Duty:                    12 hours per week  (Primarily weekends subject to programme of events)

Special Conditions:             Calls arranged with Technical Manager during preceding week.  Some unsociable hours; no overtime payable, but TOIL will be arranged

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

None. A willingness to undertake relevant professional development.

 

EXPERIENCE AND QUALITIES REQUIRED

Proven knowledge of technical equipment (lighting, sound) preferably in field of theatre & music


Ability to operate effectively within a small team

Ability to work along side artists, theatre companies and other visitors to the Met in a courteous and professional manner


Willingness to assist user groups and individuals tactfully and sympathetically


Proven ability to work efficiently and methodically  under direction


Demonstrable interest in, and enthusiasm for arts activities


Demonstrate a willingness to engage in overall philosophy underpinning the arts centre as a whole, including a commitment to Equal Opportunities and customer service.


Willingness to undertake wide area of different tasks as and when required


Willingness to contribute to development of arts practice in the Association's work  

Experience/qualifications in sound engineering/lighting design an advantage

PURPOSE AND OBJECT OF THE JOB              

To assist in the setting up, maintenance and operation  of The Met technical facilities.

To provide assistance to user groups.

To assist with the operation, maintenance, ordering and recording of stocks and equipment.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

 

Regular

 

1          To set up and operate sound and lighting equipment, staging, tiered seating, and other technical facilities in support of events.

2          To set up, operate and strike for hires.

3          To assist with the maintenance and servicing of Met equipment.

4          To assist users of The Met.        

5          To assist with maintenance improvements, replacements and additions to technical facilities.

6          To assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the building during dark periods

 

OCCASIONAL SECONDARY DUTIES

 

1          To perform Front of House duties when required.

2          To assist in all aspects of the Association's work as and when deemed necessary by the Director.

Please note:

The work involves some heavy lifting and some working at heights. It is expected that the successful applicant will work an average of 15 hours per week during busy periods with time off in lieu in August and January.

RELATIONSHIPS

 

Internal:           Permanent, temporary, full-time, part-time, casual, volunteer /training scheme staff

 

External:           User groups/arts practitioners

 

OTHER CONDITIONS

 

Holidays:           24 days plus Bank Holidays pro rata

 

Car/Travel allowance:           Authorised travel undertaken in the course of duties is allowable at local authority rates.

 

Tenure:             Notice of termination to be given by employer or employee is one calendar month.

                        Probationary period of three months.

                        Other conditions in accordance with BMAA policies.
